View Full Version : Clash Detective - Clearances
Description: I would love for the clash detective "Run/Type/Tolerance" under the Select Tab to be divided into (2) separate window panes so that we can apply different clearance tolerances to different systems.
How Used: I have to account for 1/2" insulation on a piping system and then clash that against 3" worth of fire-proofing on the structural steel (neither the fire-proofing or insulation is modeled). So, I would set my clearance for the piping system to .5" and the clearance for the structural steel to 3".
Feature Affinity: Clash Detective
Please see attached screenshot for further clarification.
Thanks!

If you are clashing plumbing vs structural steel, wouldn't you just use the 3" fireproofing as the clash test? Pick the largest insulation and use it?

Sounds like a great idea at first, but I'm with Mitch...why wouldn't you just do a 3.5" clearance?

That's right, 3.5". You'll need to add them, not take the largest of the two.
I suppose that I was misunderstanding how the clearance was being accounted for.
Thanks for clearing that up!

This is exactly what I'm looking for. How do you gett the different claerances to run on two different systems? For example Large hot water systems require 1.5" clearance and the small bore is just 1". There are areas that are so conngested that 1.5" on the small bore would create a collision where if it were 1" there would not be a collision.

I think you would have to do it with two separate clash tests with different search/selection sets. One of the sets contains the objects that need a 1.5" clearance and the other set contains the objects that need a 1" clearance.

Thanks a lot. You confirmed what I've been able to find. I wish there was a way for Navis to be smart enough to put parameters on pipe per system to know what the different pipe insulation sizes were so we didn't have to draw insulation.

There is a help file that describes a solution for the problem applying varying insulation thicknesses (clearances) by using custom rules/exceptions, but I haven't been able to make it work. It seems like there is an intended functionality there but the help file is not completely baked.
Has anyone had success with using custom rules/exceptions to this end? If so, please share.

I had forgotten about that part. Custom rules are fairly simple to set up if you have the search/selection sets setup properly first. The custom rule templates themselves should explain the process well enough.
