View Full Version : Solids modeling error

I'm working on a study model using ACAD 2005 solids modeling and have about a day of work invested. I've been usuing union and subtract and slice without incident till an hour or so ago. Now there is one main mass in the model I can not alter anymore....I get no error messages with union or subtract. The command prompt acts as if the commands were completed yet the two masses are still there afterwards and nothing has changed. The only time I get any indication that something is not right in the command line is when I try to slice the unruly mass and get:
"SLICE failed for selected solid."
Union, subtract, slice, etc all work on all other masses in the model...just not the important mass. I have tried recovering the drawing (fixed two errors but apparently this is not one of them). I have tried wblocking the entire model into a new file. Nothing changes.
Any ideas?

Hi
Have a browse of the following two results obtained via the Autodesk Discussions Groups -
"SLICE failed for selected solid" (http://discussion.autodesk.com/search!execute.jspa?numResults=25&source=forumlist%7C8&q=%22SLICE+failed+for+selected+solid%22&objID=c8&search=Search)

Check out the following Technical Documents on the Autodesk web site under the Knowledge Base section -
ID: TS64705 - Error when using solids editing commands: Modeling Operation Error (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2884719&linkID=2475323)
ID: TS18684 - Cannot edit ACIS solids (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2896841&linkID=2475323)
Please note the above don't directly answer your particular issue / problem but hopefully they will give you one or two things to look at as you try to resolve your issue / problem.
Have a good one, Mike

If the first Slice created two "visual" objects, did you try the Separate" option of Solidedit? If your two planes cross and it is still seen as one logical object this could cause a problem.

thanks to both of you.
I ran the "check" command and sure enough it is not a valid SolidObject.
Come to think of it these problems started when I was taking a chuck out of an opposite corner and either was snapping to something microscopic or my UCS was slightly off and I was left with nagging little slivers. Is this what you mean by "crossing planes" JohnBogie?
I tried going to that corner and using the separate command on what looks like a stray vertical line which is part of the overall problem solid when I select it. I get nothing but a message that "the selected solid has no lumps".
Any more ideas before I trash the whole problem solid and start over?

Hi
Sorry I can't find anything on that one....
As you built your Solid Model did you keep a copy of the Solid Primitives?
If no, I think you will find it a useful thing to do in the future when working with Solids in AutoCAD..... Sorry can't be more helpful.
Have a good one, Mike

I will look into it as these weird geometrical errors happen to me quite a bit especially if I am in a hurry.
thanks anyway

Can you post or email the file? I'm not doing much today.
Saveas A2000 though.
