I sometimes get into the situation where I need a dimension to have a double arrow on the one end, and at the same time it points to "nothing". A typical application would be if a small portion of a part is shown, but you need to refer to a point outside of the sheet (reference only) Surely that was a common practice in the old days in our environment.

Thanks

If I get what you're saying correctly, I'm picturing a detail view on a hole where one of the locator dimensions extends past the edge of the view. What I do in this case is dimension from the hole to the edge of the view, remove the edge-side extension line and arrow, and replace the dimension text with 'as noted'.

Or you could just do a Linear Symmetric dimension. Make your selection and then changed the dim type in the right click menu to Linear Symmetric.

Thanks Guys, did not even know about the existance of the linear symmetrical option. Problem solved. The learning curve will never end !
