View Full Version : Can't connect data table to excel spreadsheet

I have an incomplete data table that is part of a .shp file (it was entirely created in Map 3d). I also have an excel file with the complete data. The column headings on each file are the same. How can I connect the excel file to fill in the missing info from the data table? I have tried creating an ODCB connection through the System DSN. I used defined names in excel for each of my column headings. Then I connected to the ODCB and tried to create a join between the tables. When I do this no additional data from the excel file shows up in the data table. Is there another method or could I be doing something wrong?
Thanks

What type of join are you you trying? After you connect to the Excel file can you see the data in the Data Table? Are you sure you have the key fields matching?

Im not sure what type of join I should be doing- I think I have tried them all. But i think the problem is when I try to look at the data table for the ODCB, the column names show up but no data shows up. I have been trying different ways to create names in Excel, but the data never shows up when I connect it in Map3D.

What version of Map3D, what OS and what version of MS office are you using?

I have Map3d 2008, MS Office 2007, and Windows XP.
I have been looking through the forums and on the internet for other tutorials that might explain how to do this (connecting an excel file to a .shp or .sdf file)- it seems like it would be a common thing to do, but I havent found much. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi,

do someone knows some more about this? I have the same problem but I can't convert Excel sheet to Access because other people are working and modifying the sheet in Excel every day.

Thanks

You are doing it correctly, but apparently you have to select and "name" your data first. It is kind of stupid, but following the steps outlined here seems to work- http://www.civil3d.com/2009/12/using-obdc-to-map-your-own-data/

Good luck!
