Perspective View Problems

I am new user plodding through varius tutorials and peridiocally when I select View-Perspective or select F8 the 3D geometry goes crazy in the 3D Editor. It looks fine in Visualize. My only recourse is to start over. What am I doing wrong.

You can adjust this with the "Distort Perspective" button on the bottom of the left-hand toolbar (see attached).

I must have a setting wrong. The Distort Perspective button has no effect. When i finally get the view fixed it reoccurs each time I select perspective or F8.
