tag family options?

my goal is to create a tag family that operates similar to text with a leader, but with the benefit of maintaining an associative relationship with elements' parameters. the tag creation itself is fairly simple, but the problem i'm experiencing is that when i create the tag for each element i'd like tagged, i must detach the end from the element so that i may manipulate it similar to text with a leader.

is there some way when editing the family to have the end detached by default? am i missing some simple or obvious solution?

i guess it is just the nature of the way tags are handled by revit. i suppose i can limit the necessity for switching from attached end to free end by tagging elements en masse, but it would be nice if it were possible for this to be a parameter related to the system family rather than an option. sorry for the wasted post.
