View Full Version : Win7 and Table Objects from Excel

Under WinXP Pro I was able to open an Excel spreadsheet, clear all formatting, copyclip the spreadsheet data, "Paste Special" - Autocad Entitites - and the data would be pasted directly into a table object that was of the tablestyle current at the time.
In Win 7, this does not work, Using exact same procedure, Autocad insists on pasting each cell in the spreadsheet in as a separate text object and not as a table object. Is there a setting I've failed to set?"
This procedure still works on our machines that are running Acad 2009, same SP's, etc, but on WinXP Pro 64 bit. Only difference seems to be XP vs Win7

Win7 Pro 64 bit, Acad 2009 as part of Inventor Suite 2009, Service Pack 2 applied both Inv and Acad.
Aero is enabled in Win7. Excel 2003, SP3

Please help - this is an important functionality I seem to have lost in Win7!

Thanks
Mike

I can confirm your issue. I'm going to open a tech support incident.

Ok, I've isolated the issue.

On Win7 (64-bit) you need to save the Excel file before you can paste as a table object in AutoCAD. This is certainly a regression as I've noted in the tech support case (SR 1-8279228621). I expect confirmation from Autodesk in the next day or two.

With the help of Autodesk's tech support, I finally can fully state what is causing the issue:

You have Excel 2007 configured in Compatibilty Mode. This is usually done by setting the default file save type as 2003 (xls) format. When Excel is set this way, in Windows 7 64-bit, the copy operation to the clipboard does not "see" the clip as coming from the Excel application. Rather, it is shown in the Paste dialog as an "unknown application". Only if the Excel spreadsheet is saved as an XLSX(M) can you copy to clipboard and the clipboard "see" Excel as the application.

The jury is still out as to whether this is Autodesk's issue or Microsoft's issue. I haven't yet installed another application that can paste an Excel range to test if it is Microsoft's issue.

So the upshot is that you cannot copy and paste from XLS files in Windows 7 64-bit and get a table object in AutoCAD.

Thanks for all your follow thru. However, you will note that I stated I was using Excel 2003. While I have found a plug-in for Excel on Microsoft site that allows me to save to XLSXM format in Excel 2003, apprently the clipboard still does not recognize it as a legtimate object, I suspect because MS Office 2007 or some part thereof that updates the registry ia not installed.
BTW, where did you find a clipboard viewer for Win7? The old clipboard.exe seems to be gone.

I did not find a clipboard viewer. We can infer the issue thanks to the Paste Special dialog in AutoCAD.

Yup. Also have another machine here with Win 7 but no plugin and it won't behave properly with regards to the table object issue, so it's not the plugin (although it did make me scratch my head for a second)
Again, thanks for your effort - not having this functionality is really crippling our ability to create parts lists, etc in Acad.
