Suggestions For Inventor Fusion

I think it should be offered as a stand alone direct modeler. Frankly, I have about zero interest in the "fusion" side of this product... the change manager. What I do have a great deal of interest in is direct modeling rather than 25 year dated technology that was popularized by PTC (Pro/E) now commonly called history based solid modeling.

In addition, I think Autodesk should make a concerted effort to get a CAM company to create a CAM program that runs inside of Inventor Fusion rather than just Inventor. The reason for this request is simple if you understand the machining job shop business. Many machining job shops spend most of their time working with non-native data. When you have a very close relationship with your customers they often want you to change their solid part model to make it manufacturable / make it cheaper. Direct modeling is the only way to go for this type of application (working with "dumb solids" / non-native data.)

A history based modeler is truly a time wasting nightmare when it comes to working with non-native solids / "dumb solids".

Thank you for your suggestion. From your comments it is easy to see the difference between computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing. Having worked in the reprographics industry, your situation sounds like the 3D version of fixing up 2D plots before printing them. I will pass your comments on to the Fusion team.

Hi Scott,

I can certainly see that there would be similarities because I'm sure you often got stuff that needed a ton of prep work. The same often applies to getting solid models that need to be machined. Frequently a designer or engineer isn't a machinist and doesn't have the many years of experience working in a machine shop to understand what's really needed. The result is that they don't deliver solid models that can be machined or be machined for a reasonable price.

History based modeling is the worst tool possible to work on a non-native solid / "dumb solids".

I badly want to see Autodesk offer a product exclusively for the direct modeling CAD market. The market for powerful / integrated CADCAM solutions is a sizable one. Right now most shops I know are using multiple products in order to get the job done and very few think it's an efficient solution.

Perhaps AutoDesk should buy Spaceclaim, now that Pro/E has incorporated Co-Create?
