Question about pipe networks and alignments

Before I start training I have been experimenting with Civil 3d. What is the best practice for designing pipe networks and alignments? All of the examples I have seen are from projects involving a proposed road centerline alignment and the pipe network is associated with that alignment but typically I don't have a road centerline, I will only have multiple pipe centerline segments. Does each leg of my sewer need to have it's own alignment specified?

Pipe networks don't need alignment to work. In many more cases than not, a network is typically shown in profile, which is why many examples are shown together with an alignment and profile.

Civil 3d tools have the ability to create an alignment for parts of a pipe network.
