cut fill surface dissappear

I am having huge problem... My cut and fill volume surfaces have dissappeared 2 times from my drawings. I have data shortcuts giving me my design and existing surface in my cut and fill drawing. Then I create a cut fill surface from them. I close the drawing, reopen it and they are gone...

"They", being the DS surfaces and the volume surface or do you mean multiple volume surfaces?

I am creating a grid volume surface between a design and an existing surface

all the surfaces are there BUT the volumes. I even tried to create a new drawing just to create them in by themselves, and they still disappear

"Promote" the existing and design surfaces into the volume surface drawing and see if that helps to retain the volume surface on reopen. If it remains, the problem is with the data reference... I guess. Worth a try though to figure out at least where the problem is occuring.
