Hi,
I should be posting this wish to Vanilla AutoCAD wish list forums. Instead, I post here as I was unable to make any posts over there. I look forward to moderators moving this wish to the AutoCAD wish lists.

Description:
It would really nice if we have a feature inside AutoCAD to convert PDF underlays into raster images. Currently we are restricted from using PDF underlays due to backward compatibility issues. Once we convert it to raster image, it is highly backward compatible and editable.

How Used:

Most of the PDF editors have the facility to extract TIF images from the PDF files. That means it is not something impossible or really hard to achieve. Please consider the following advantages;
Compatible with previous versions of AutoCAD. You can send it to anybody with peace of mind.
It becomes editable. You can easily make changes to the underlay using raster editing softwares like AutoCAD Raster Design.

why would this belong in Acad when there are already so many ways to convert pdf to images? seems un-reasonable to expect autodesk developers to be able to do a decent job making rasters out of pdf files, when there are people who are really good at it already in that arena.

Because AutoCAD supports both the formats. Most of file conversion functionalities available inside AutoCAD were available outside and they were doing a decent job too. Why do Autodesk keep on adding those things in AutoCAD?. Come on, you know the answer better than me.

My humble opinion is to let Autodesk decide whether it is reasonable or unreasonable to add an attractive feature to their product. Personally I hate to depend on third party software products to get what I wanted to do inside AutoCAD.

My guess is that Autodesk isn't that concerned with "backward compatibility issues" - and that their answer is "get with the program and upgrade..."

Can't hurt to ask I suppose...
