View Full Version : Multiple Disciplines working on a project

Our company has disciplines across the board. The Civil, Landscape and M/E/P have been using Autodesk for years. The Structural department converted to ADT 2005 in Sept 2004. The Architecture department is converting to ADT 2005 by June 2005.

Ultimately, we will be using ADT 2005, Build Sys 2005, and Civil 3-D.

I am in need of guidance for folder structure and how the project is best organized. We want to use the fields for sheet numbering, etc. and was wondering if all disciplines could operate under 1 APJ file?

The Job Captain would be in control of the Project Navigator data input. But, is there a problem with multiple disciplines/people accessing the Project Navigator to create sheets and views?

This is our proposed folder structure:

Project Name
-------CAD
-------------Architecture
-------------Civil
-------------Electrical
-------------General
-------------Landscape
-------------Mechanical
-------------Plumbing
-------------Structural

We have very similar file structure for all projects. What you have watch for are civil files. Land desk creates specific files that can be difficult to move. Our file structure includes phase changes sd dd cd etc.... and some land desk files need to be created in the main directory and not under the phases.

How do you deal with the XREF locations when you change to different phase directories throughout the project?

How do deal backgrounds? Do you store a stripped down version of the ARCH floor plan so the remaining disciplines do not need to sift through the numerous layers? This was talked about.

Our company operates much the same (multi-discipline structure). One thing that we have is a folder where all the reference files are kept at the discipline directory level. ALL references are kept there - regardless of which discipline is using them, including image files that are used.

Who has control of the Project Navigator Data? Does the job captain handle this?

Does the Building System users utilize their own separate APJ files?

As previously mentioned, It was discussed that the Arch dept should create a stripped down DWG so the MEP staff (and maybe others) does not need to sift through extraneous data. I really do not see a need for this -- your thoughts??

What fonts do you use? We are seriously thinking of using 'out-of-the-box' fonts to eliminate the coordination with possible consultants.
