I’m creating a drawing of a new part that is very similar to an existing part. I want to use the drawing of the existing part and adapt it for use with the new part, so I can utilize common dimensions, tolerances, hole notes etc. Once I’ve saved the existing drawing as a copy, how can I link the new drawing and new part?

If I am understanding you correctly, I don't think you want to save the drawing as a copy. If it is a different part, you may want to save the part as a copy, and then modify that part. Place a view of the new part into a drawing. Most of the model dimensions should be the same, unless you changed them in your copy.

Sorry if I misunderstood the problem...

Use DA (Design Assistant) to copy both the IDW and IPT to a new location/name.

1) First copy your IDW to a new location
2) Browse to your new IDW (using Windows Explorer) --> RMB --> Design Assistent
3) Select the referenced IPT --> Action --> Rename.
4) Change the location (and name) of your IPT
5) Hit Save
