I am looking for a program that will archive images. Some sort of database/viewer would be ideal. I am working with someone who doing research on European vernacular architecture and am looking for a program that would allow me to archive analyzations within a categorical hierarchy and also give each image description with a thumbnail preview.
Do you have any recommendations? And, if you do can you give me an idea of the programs cost? Being able to easily backup the database is also of course a high priority.

Are you looking for something like ACDSee? You can store metadata about the images, categorize them, edit them, view them, sort them...whatever! Costs about $50.

I have ACDSee, but I am looking for something that is more specific/advanced. I would envision clicking on a category and having a display of thumbnails with descriptions. Many of the images that I would be archiving would be analyzations, so I am really looking for the ability to attach/ link detailed explanations/descriptions of each image

Someone has spoken about using Media Bin before, either here or on alt.cad.revit. I know nothing about it but it is some kind of image or possibly multi-media database. Can be used across multiple locations.
Try searching.

Take a look at ideal.com, under the Document Management section. They might have it.

My wife's firm uses Thumbs Plus. I don't know what it's full capabilities are but she is happy with it. I believe that it is available in a light version for free with a fully functional version for about $50.
I remember seeing an article in some magazine comparing image management software but I can't remember which magazine it was. But you might try Googleing for "image archiving software" or something similar to find the article.

Googled but didn't find the article that I was talking about. However, I did find these reviews. (http://graphicssoft.about.com/cs/imagemgmtreviews/)

for those of you interested I looked at a few programs and am pretty impressed with imatch http://www.photools.com/. It is a bit more complicated then most straight image browsers, but it seems like it will do a better job at archiving images in more logical structure.
