View Full Version : Central file location - what works?

I currently have our Central file located on the same workstation I'm working from. Is this an okay setup, or do things function better/faster if Central is located on a server? And if so, what are options that are working good? I'd rather not purchase another computer and have been looking a combined VPN/Firewall/Server unit like a USR 8200 (http://www.usr.com/products/networking/router-product.asp?sku=USR8200).
TIA,
Fred

sounds like your a single user? If so then your set on your local machine. ONly problem is lack of redundancy if there is a problem with your machine. Your project should work must faster if it isn't saving over a network.

We have to do that right now as there is an issue with central files being located on a Novell or Linux server.

If Linux is causing problems, then would it be a good assumption that these other solutions, like NAS's, would have issues? Don't they use some form of Linux? Has anyone tried Snap servers for Central location?

When we first started using worksets at my office, one of my co-workers' machines was being used a server. We had problems because not everyone was referencing the same file path to access the central file. My co-worker's local file was referencing the central file on her local machine, while everyone else was trying to reference the central file across a network path.
Eventually we bought another machine, and then shuffled computers around so that our lowest-powered machine could act as a server, and then everyone would access files from that machine across the same network path. Everything worked much better.

Well we have a rule to put ours on the server because of the daily backups. Do you routinely backup your workstation (i.e. daily or every two or three days?)...if not, i would recommend doing so if you plan to put the central file there. Save yourself the heartache/headache of starting over should the inevitable loss of info occur.

RE network path - we figured that out. The shared folder is mapped, and the central file save has to be via the mapped path. The local revit file retains that path for the STC.
RE backup: yep, daily incremental backup to HD & off-site via flash-drive. The revit "_back-up" folder sure chews up backup capacity tho', so I'm considering not backing that up....

Please be aware that some of what goes on in Save to Central is done on the server machine. Having a low powered machine as the server could make this operation slower.

What kind of access permission should the users have 'on the central file' located in the server? Is it okay if you have 'read/write' access to it? Or dothey need 'full control' over the central file?
Recently, I came across a issue with one of the clients project having worksets and the central file is saved in the server. The user receive this while STC(saving to central) "An unknown error occured while accessing \\Data server\project folder\Project_Central_back-up\wperms.dat"
I have attached the error message for you to check.
I checked the folder in which the Central file resides and is with 'read/write' access but not 'full control'.
someone from the factory can clarify this?

W have confirmed this issue with support on 8.0. I don't know if it was resolved in 8.1 and haven't had time to personally test it yet.
