Elements not Editable during STC

Why would I get an error saying Elements Not Editable when I Save to Central on my current project? I'm not releasing anything, I'm just publishing changes, and yet for some reason it says I have to make a few elements editable just to complete the Save to Central process. Why would it do this?

Also I got a warning about elements not joining because one or both is not editable. I don't understand why it would do that, either.

When you Save to Central, it automatically does a Reload Latest first. This combines your changes with changes that have occurred in the central file since your last reload latest. In some unusual situations combining your changes with the ones in the central file causes some element to change in a way that requires editability.
