I installed a firewall and networked the computers at home a few weekends back.

Is there an EASY way to access my hard drive at home if i know the IP?

Using a program like pcAnywhere (http://www.symantec.com/pcanywhere/Consumer/index.html) would do what you want.

I thought about checking into something like that, but figured it had to be easier than spending money. :|

Does VPN work with Win2k?

Does VPN work with Win2k?

VPN does work with Win2K, but you will need a VPN Server to connect to. This can be done with a router that has a VPN Server built-in or by installing Win2K Server and enabling Routing and Remote Access.

Win2K Workstation does not have the capability of acting as a VPN Server built-in so either way you will need to spend some money to get what you want.

pcAnywhere is probably your cheapest and easiest solution overall unless you already have a copy of Win2K Server

You might be able to use Remote Desktop, or Terminal Services as it's known in Win 2K. If my memory is right, it's not installed with Win 2k but you can download it from Microsoft's website for free.

I've not set it up myself, but from talking to those who have, you do have to open up some ports on the home machine to allow the connection.

The other issue (and it's a potential big one), it' s not as secure as a VPN or some of the other methods of remotely answering a system.

I hope this helps.

Another option would be to set up an FTP server on your home computer. There are some free ones out there. I had used one for a while, but forgot the name. Also there are some free remote access tools. Don't known how well they work. Haven't tried any of them.

list of free remote access programs (http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/network/fwremote.html)

Open source FTP server/client: FileZilla (http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla/)

Golden FTP Server Free (http://www.goldenftpserver.com/)

I'm using a Netgear rp614v2(?) that does have VPN built into it. (won't do wireless)
Outside the help files from Netgear <smirk> where's a trusted site to read-up on what i will need to do?

I'll check into FTP also. Thanks.

Don't know if you already have something in place, but this might interest you. I just started using this and it was extremely easy. Just install the software on any computer you want to connected to your VPN network. Works through most routers with no changes to setting. Like I said extremely easy.

With Hamachi you can organize two or more computers with an Internet connection into their own virtual network for direct secure communication.

Have you tried using VNC to connect remotely to your PC? It is a very cheap and easy solution.

Try using gosupportnow remote support application for remotely accessing computer hard drives, desktops, laptops etc. It is easy to use and costs only $19.95/ month.
