Will someone please write a plug-in to export .obj or 3ds files?

I want to use other 3d apps beside Autodesk's. Many of us have asked them for it and we are getting ignored :?. I would gladly pay for it. I am branching out in rendering apps and have found that DWG or DXF just isn't cutting it. I am begging one you guys to write this plug -in. It would make many Revit users very very happy.

The API ,currently enabled, is not a general API, but an API accessible when required for specific external processing, energy, acoustics, analysis, etc.

It would not allow a plug - in like that to be written.

Not quite true, geometry, and some material mapping is possible. However this isn't a small task and you really need a good knowledge of the format you're trying to export to. I just gave in and purchased VIZ. And I'm finding Revit->VIZ->Maxwell is OK.

You're right though, .3ds and .obj are standards even $500 software can export too. This is something that should come from Autodesk. We shouldn't have to be writing exporters for these.

ARGGGG! This sooo frusterating. Are you listening Autodesk or just going to continue ignoring this issue? Viz & Max are overpriced and slow. There are products under $1k that are faster and produce a better quality output. DXF is an old way of importing and most don't even allow DWG. Pease resolve this and give an explaination why are you haven't done it yet. Thanks for the info Beegee & Guy R. Let me know if you get any more info on this matter.

Point proven. Autodesk is silent. Soo sad that you can't answer a simple question. I am really disappointed in Autodesk right now. :?

You will not get an export to another file format until Autodesk buys the software you are wanting to use. They have operated for years ignoring any requests for import or export of any product that competes with one of their's.

even the PDF export in Revits stinks and they are not improving it because they are wanting to push their DWF viewer and composer

We may now because of Autodesk's purchase of Alias. I am not holding my breath though.

Huh? They already own max and the 3ds format.

Besides Max is what he meant. If you want to use another app besides an Autodesk. I.E. XSI, Lightwave, Modo, etc. etc. Not many apps are supporting DXF or DWG anymore.

Why would you ever consider doing that?

Now that Autodesk owns Alias do you think we will get an FBX export option? That would be ideal from what I have read about it.

Any new info on this topic? I have put in a support request and will continue bugging them until I get an answer. I just find it ironic that Autodesk now owns Alias and yet Revit doesn't "place nice" with those apps.

They've owned 3dStudio for longer than Alias and there's still no direct link. I don't think they can continue to ignore requests for this. At AU, they "answered" this question by saying that they were looking at it.

Then again they can't even put true OpenGL in Revit, so I am not surprised. Revit does "not play nice with others".

Ironic that it doesn't even "play nice" with products that Autodesk owns, i.e. Maya. Yet you can import a SketchUP model directly. Ironic? Hmmm.
