I've been asked to look into some intelligent P&ID drawing packages and was wondering if you have any recommendations.
The P&IDs must be able to get linked to all instrumentation work. Produce data sheets, schedules etc etc. I would also be nice if it could generate a spares listing and maintenance schedules for he client.
I've had a quick look at Bentley (not a lot of info), Plant4D and CADworx. We don't have the need to PDMS or PDS.
Anyone got any preferred options.
Future option would be automatic loop generation etc etc.
Many Thanks

Hi
Autodesk® Building Systems (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/index?siteID=123112&id=3290681)

Keep an eye out for Revit MEP (sometime early next year I believe).
Have a good one, Mike

Thanks Mike, but it's more to do with process engineering than building services.

We went for CADworx but it doesn't give much more than our in house package for P&ID's so we have reverted to using that and just use their 3D piping software. I would recommend that you look into the instrument package you will link into first and then see which P&ID package works best with it. Instrumentation software packages are usually generic data based and will require a fair amount of customisation to suit your company. We reviewed all the software you have listed and their P&ID software all did pretty much the same thing. CADworx seemed the best price and easiest to use at the time.

Hi Robert.
The only package I've used (briefly) was AutoPlant from Rebis.
Not cheap but seems capable.

Robert,
Take a look at SmartPlant P&ID from Intergraph.

We are just starting to use Comos PT from Innotec. http://www.innotec.de/en/cae/index.php

I did. The £48,000 for a full 3d seat frightened us. That was SmartPlant P&ID, Instrumentation, Electrical, the 3D module etc.
Bentleys AutoPlant comes in at just under £12,000 for the same thing.
Thanks anyway.

So it was a success then :)
We need a product that will generate instrumentation data from P&ID. I agree that they all do much the same and the instrumentation side will be the biggest part but if Bentley does roughly the same as SmartPlant then guess who'll get the nod.

Success - well sort of.
With instrument data contained within a P&ID is pretty basic. I guess what you would be after is drafting a standard loop (say temperature) on your P&ID and then export that data into the instrumentation side. We didn't do this because at the time the software wasn't 100%.
Since then COADE has broken the P&ID bit into two versions. You want to look at P&ID professional. We had a deal with Fern (UK distributer) where we got Plant, P&ID and training for £6k (one seat of each). We also looked at Rebis Autoplant, CEA Plant4D and CADpipe - cost won (between you and me COADE seemed best for small scale and CEA seemed the best for large scale projects. CEA actually offered to match the COADE price afterwards).
If like us you are owner operator then I would still recommend COADE and start small as I would guess you already have hundreds of loops already drafted which you may be able to lmport into which ever system you choose.
