We moved to Revit, so NCS is no longer relevant. Unfortunately, it is a backward looking document. The NCS should look in to developing open file format standards rather than "layer colors" based on old pen plotters.

Click the poll to add your answer to the mix.Ah, I like to keep things clean and simple (being as we have a large number of contractors doing work for us, and they'd just throw away something as thick as the ncs), my standards are just basically quality control and some preferences for my uses (such as having piping text on the same layer so I can easily turn off everything I don't need, or having everything completely two dimensional so they measurements I run don't come out skewed, etc).

I've known about them for a long time, but I haven't even looked at them. We are self contained and don't exchange dwgs with outside companies...very often. So we developed our own standards early on, when we first got acad, because it was obvious that it would save us editing time. We don't have anything written down, we've all been here so long.

We are going to start using the NCS here in a few months. Right now there isn't really any standards. There is a little bit, but no one follows it

We looked into the NCS a while ago, and really didn't find it applicable. We have our own in-house standards that we enforce using any methods necessary...beatings, threats, hiding the coffee...we're strict! ;)

I use them. if you look at them, there are contingencies for specific applications. By following their guidelines, means basically naming conventions that start and end with specific lettering and numbering. If you are doing federally funded jobs, you had better be in compliance with these standards. You can easily merge these standards with your own companies standards. even things like fonts are left open for some leeway.

for a lesson in CAD standards, go to the ATP archives and find the Coup D'etat lessons.
