This is an amendment to Scott Davis's Thread on this Aug 4th, 2004
Scott pointed the way and I will guide you completely thru the process.

I will use his text and then expand on it.

When you create a stair, and Revit automatically adds railing to both sides, these railings are defined by the same properties.....but they don't have to be!

Select the railing that is to become a handrail along the wall

Go to Element Properties>Edit/New>Duplicate> and then Rename your new railing

I used "Handrail - Rect Wall Only" or Your own name

Here is my amendment and the nutty gritty of how to do it

You need to create a clear baluster and a clear post - as such you will do the
same set of instructions as follows for each one - post and baluster as follows:

File

New

Family (this should open the Imperial Template folder and you should see
both Baluster and Baluster - Post (Start with one or when finished you wiil
use these same instructions for the other, I will start w.Baluster)

click on Baluster and select Open

File

Save As rename it as Baluster - Clear None

Load into Project

close this Baluster

Repeat same steps above only this time select Baluster - Post

Save As Baluster - Post Clear None

Now go back to the wall railing you modified the name earlier

Element Properties

Edit/New

Select Baluster Placement

the top part lists Railing

select the Baluster Family and change it to your newly created
Baluster - Clear None

the bottom part lists the Posts

select the Baluster Family and change it to your newly created
Baluster Post - Clear None for all instances shown

select ok and wallah you have now created a handrail wall only element.

Hi,

I'm interested to know why you create null posts and balusters instead of just turning off posts and balusters in the railing family ( by selecting "none" ) ?

Bruce,

I could not find that option in the selection box and given that
Scott Davis did not address it in his beginning Aug 4rth 2004
I just took it from there. His whole topic of the post was "How
Do I build a wall mounted handrail"

Your right it was simpler than I had typed merely rename
the railing. When editing select Balluster Placement
do select Balluster Properties and under Rail and Posts
select none for the Balluster Family.

And then Walla your done.

Sure,

Just select "none"in the baluster dialogue of the railing properties.

I think Scott's point was that baluster families could be built as the wall mounted brackets for the handrail.

This is gonna get into an area that would be best explained by the "How to create custom railings" tutorial, but here goes:

When you create a stair, and Revit automcatically adds railing to both sides, these railings are defined by the same properties.....but they don't have to be! Select the railing that is to become a handrail along the wall, go to Properties>Edit/New>Duplicate> and then Rename your new railing. Now comes the tougher part, which is gonna take some pratice or a tutorial....you can now edit this railing to be a hand rail only at what ever height you'd like and then you can even create custom 'ballusters' that are the handrail attachment hardware set at what ever spacing you need. (A balluster family does not have to be a 'balluster' in the traditional sense!)

any ways....without really explaing the entire process, (i'll leave that to the tutorial) that's it in a nutshell!

I just created a wall-mounted railing using wall-mount railing bracket families as the balusters, works great.
