We are currently using ADT 2006. We use the project navigator to mkeep track of drawings. The main problem that we have is long load times of drawings in out remote offices. On some drawings it takes as long as 15 min to load a drawing. Is there anyone out there that uses the navigator over the net with outside offices?

If it's a 2Mbps connection then you're looking at 240Kb/sec on a good day. Bear in mind that the connection will be shared with all the other users in the company.

Currently my company is evaluating the use of WAN Caching Appliances to boost performance between office locations. Many of our office have full private-line T1's (1.5Mbit up/down) but we still experience performance problems when opening larger drawing files between offices. Much of our bandwidth gets consumed with multiple users opening files from other offices, file replication, e-mail traffic, Internet browsing, etc. which compounds the problem. To resolve our bandwidth issues we plan to test hardware from Riverbed (www.riverbed.com), and other similar manufacturers.

This type of solution is somewhat costly but may be our only solution other than increasing our WAN connection bandwidth which also comes at a high reoccurring cost.

There are a number of firms who report great advantages when using these type of devices on a MPLS cloud. Load times of 10-15 seconds are possible across the WAN when the project data is correctly "pre-loaded".

Most firms are still maintaining the "active" file localized to the office with the rest of the project being referenced in. These reference files are the ones typically pulled across and replicated by the steelheads.

If this poses too much of a burden/cost, you might try copying the file structure local to the office doing the work and then spoof the drives so the pc thinks it is looking at a mapped drive location, but it is really looking at a local folder "dos substituted" as a virtual drive.

Hope that helps,
