Plotting Line Weights

Is it possible to set up line weights for objects such as a crosshatch, but so that it prints as a shade? maybe there's some sort of screening like what AutoCAD has?

do you mean solid fill or hatch

If solid fill, then make it grey etc to get the colour required (or even half tone)

if hatch, then make the hatch colour grey etc to get the desired colour

then print in the shaded mode, I think this should do it

Line weights and line colours can be assigned to hatch ( non solid ) fill regions.

In 9.0 , draw order can be used with a transparent fill region to achieve a hatch over solid fill.
