Is it possible to export a dwg as a shp file, and then import it back?

Mick, Express Tools has a MKSHAPE command. Select dwg ents and saves to a shp file. Shapes can then be inserted like blocks. The dwg then references the shape file.

MAP will do this directly, under tools export.
