i'm using 2007 - Land Desktop & (maybe) Civil 3D - the IT guy here thinks 512 MB of ram is enough - what do I need to tell me boss to tell him to get? - i am working with large raster images inside drawings - typical dwg is 2,000,000

Autodesk usually has a recommended system config on their website...For AutoCAD the recommended is 2 Gig RAM...I think that LD and Civil should use at least that much...I think the IT guy is looking at the minimum requirements...
FYI...Try to make sure that the IT guy gets RAM compatible with the motherboard...I have accidentally order the wrong RAM and my machine kept crashing...I finally got the wrong RAM to work, but that is through changing timings, frequency and overclocking the system...More work than it is worth...I hope you get what you need...

Order a machine with 512mb ram, and a second one with 2GB ram.
Have your IT guy sit down at the one with 512 and try to keep up with you on the 2GB machine ;)

The more RAM the better when dealing with Civil projects. Civil 3D in particular those 2GB are a must.

The same goes for working with large raster images so you have sevreal reasons to get the extra ram.
