Hey all. There used to be this really neat thread that had all sorts of methods people had recommended to learn Lisp. So...

What reference materials do/did you use to learn lisp? And what was you opinion of them? (ie good, bad, beginners, advanced, etc)

Thank you for any help in resurrecting this thread!!! :D

Hi

Below snippet is from an old ACAD Guild post that I made (Aug 2003); note additions in red -

I wondered what happened to that site, also. Hope it will still be available.

Mike, thanks for referring to my humble stuff. Although that URL is still valid, it has moved to http://www.smadsen.com. The old URL will not be updated anymore.

Hi Wolfgirl

If you're into good old fashioned paper, there are a couple of good text books out there.
For novices, the best one I've seen is:

AutoLISP Programming: Principles & Techniques
Author- Rod Rawls
Publisher- Goodheart Willcox
ISBN No.- 1566374170

For more advanced folk, there's:

AutoCAD Developer's Guide to Visual LISP
Author- Nikolai Poleschuk
Publisher- Charles River Media
ISBN No. 1584500913

I teach an introductory AutoLISP class at a local college, & these are the texts I recommend to my students.

I found this zip file on a website.....looks like lesson plans to teach lisp.

Hi

Sorry for the *edit* but I believe it would best if the file Lesson.zip was *not* posted on the AUGI web site unless the author has given their permission (if they have then please accept my apology and repost the file).

Better still, please post the URL to Lesson.zip so people can go to the authors site directly and download the file for themselves.

AUGI can not take chances with regard any Copyright infringements that may exist + It would be only proper/right to get the author's permission before posting their work.

Thanks for your understanding,

Mike

I Learnt Lisp back in Release 11, then release 12 came out with a very good manual on using Lisp (hard copy of course).......If you can get hold of that you are well on your way. I still use it more than anything else!

Ya'll are awesome!!!! I spent quite a while today at work changing lower case text to upper case, and I KNEW there was a Lisp program to do it! We had it where I worked before, so I knew it could be done! I just started doing some CAD consulting for a civil engineering firm...I haven't gotten my laptop yet, and the computer I was working on didn't have 'net access, so I couldn't get to my AUGI forums! It's outrageous that they pay me so much, when half the time I'm looking up answers on AUGI! :) Keep up the great work!

You could try Afralisp (http://www.afralisp.net/). This site has some good tutorials.

If you have any questions, just ask in here. Someone will come along and help you out.

Hi Gareth,

I teach Visual LISP at a college level and have tried a few different to present the material.

I would suggest the book AutoLISP programming practices and techniques by Rawls and Hagen.

It is written for r14 but is a great place to start learning lisp.

It is an excellent workbook to learn "AutoLISP".

Once you have a good foundation in "AutoLISP" ... The visual LISP part is fairly straight forward.

Ofcourse the best place to learn LISP is on any one of the several LISP forums including, the autodesk newgroups, AUGI forums, theswamp.org, or www.waun.org (http://www.waun.org) email lists.

As mentioned about Kenny Ramage's afra lisp is also an excellent resourse.

Autodesk University is a good place to learn too.

Please note that I have merged your thread with this one.

I have also stickied this thread since it contains a collection of great resources for learning lisp. Hopefully this will make it easier for new people wanting to learn lisp to find.

Thanks

I Learnt Lisp back in Release 11, then release 12 came out with a very good manual on using Lisp (hard copy of course).......If you can get hold of that you are well on your way. I still use it more than anything else!

I couldn't agree more - I have a borrowed copy on my desk here at work, and another copy (which I was fortunate enough to be given when a previous workplace upgraded to R14) in my office at home.

I find it much easier than navigating the online help. My only concern though is that it might not include the whole of the available function list, seeing as it is now over 13 years old. I haven't found anything yet that has been dropped, though, so that means that it is a good place to start as everything in it stillworks (afaik).

Personally I think it would be a good move on the part of AutoDesk if they were to offer a new edition of this invaluable resource. Its best feature is that it is written in plain language so as even newbies like myself can understand it, yet it covers even the most complex topics.

Chapter 4 (Catalog of AutoLISP Functions) in particular is exceptionally helpful as a 'Quick Reference', and I have even seen LISP programmers with many years of experience refer back to this book on a regular basis.

I just got back myself and
was able to find all my lisp friends...
Kenny and others....

I knew Kenny was away but wow
this site is easily doubled in size...

I have hours and hours of reading to do to catch again...

So many codes to read but so little time...:)

I recommend "AutoLISP in plain English"
Also I find the AutoCAD R12 AutoLISP manual to very useful.

Hi all,
I am very new to AutoLISP. I found 14 lessons (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=2309147&linkID=2475176) by Dave Pitzer on AutoCAD website very cool. It's so easy that I could cover all the chapters by 3 days. I found it staright forward and easy to understand. Many thanks to Dave and all LISPers here.
