When a plot is spooling from AutoCAD my memory usage is increased by about 350Mb.
My PC currently has about 700Mb of RAM, if I already have a few drawings open, and then plot, I can soon run out of memory. AutoCAD then shuts down.
Is it normal for AutoCAD to use this much memory whilst plotting ?
Do I need more RAM ?

In addition, I've tried setting the background plotting option, but this seems to make little difference.

what kind of drawing are you plotting?

More Free Space on the hard drive would help.
more RAM wouldn't hurt.
Also configure the port to print direct to
the plotter without spooling locally.

I'm plotting fairly large site/factory layouts from paperspace.
The drawings are normally contain about 100,000 objects and are about 5Mb in file size.
