I am trying to learn desktop on my own but have some very basic questions. I was told "don't put in a text height in text creation". But then how do you make the text the appropriate size? The person I'm working with says it should be 3/32". When I scale the finished plot the text is larger than it should be-scaled in the drawing model space it has strange dimensions like 8-16/32"? Can you tell what I've done and how can I repair this? Can I import styles from the other person's drawings and have it work? What happened to picking points and the side on which you wanted the dimension?

We use text in model space and scale it appropriately to the plotted scale. 4.5" yields 3/32" for 1/4" scale and 9" for 1/8" scale, etc.

I don't know who told you not to enter it when creating the text, that's where I do it. I always use MText, never DText. I think that is where we used to click for height and direction.

ADT manages this for you when you are using Intelligent dimensions.

Set your Annotation scale to 3/32 from 1/8 if that is the standard you wish to use.

This will ensure that all your annotation text is set to match that height.

Putting in regular text is still controlled manually with the height setting.

We never set the text height at style creation. Doing that means you need a different style for each height text you use! When you start your Mtext note, you can enter the size you wish the text to be on the statistics bar above the text field. The size of the text is determined by the plot scale, 4.5" for 1/4" scale, etc.

As for the dimension text, if you don't use the AEC Dimensioning, you can set all your standard sizes to actual size, e.i., 3/32" high text, 3/32" tick marks, etc in dimstyle "Standard" with the dimscale set to 1. Then you can make a copy of "Standard" calling it "Standard_48" (for 1/4" scale) and set the dimscale to 48. This makes an easy way to create new styles at different scales and always have the correct text size, arrow size, etc no matter what the plot scale.

I hope that wasn't too confusing.

Good Luck,

Here is some text scaling I used before for 3/32"

SCALE TEXT 3/32" TITLE 1/4"
1/32"=1’ 3'-0" 8'-0"
1/16"=1’ 1'-6" 4--0"
3/32"= 1' 1' 3'-0"
1/8"=1’ 9" 2--0"
3/16"=1’ 6" 1'-6"
1/4"=1’ 4 1/2" 1’-0"
3/8"=1’ 3" 9"
1/2"=1’ 2 1/4" 6"
3/4"=1’ 1 1/2" 4 1/2"
1"=1’ 1 1/8" 3"
1 1/2"=1’ 3/4" 2"
3"=1’ 3/8" 1"
6"=1’ 3/16" 1/2"
FULL1'=1' 3/32" 3/32"
1"=10' 11 1/4" 2-6"
1"=20' 1'-10 1/2" 5'
1"=30' 2'-9 3/4" 7'-6"
1"=40' 3'9" 10'
1"=50' 4--10 1/4" 12'-6"
1"=60' 5-6" 15'
1"=100' 9'-4 1/2" 25'
1"=150' 14' 37'-6"
1"=200' 18'-9" 50'
1"=300' 28' 75'
1"=500' 48'-61/2" 125'

Hope this helps someone.......

Also if you do all of your text in paperspace then you dont need to have different text size for different scale drawings.........just my 2 cents.....

Text in paperspace...AARRGGHHH!!!

Not associated with the drawing...AARRGGHHH!!!

Will we ever learn the truth?

You can make your dimension in paperspace associative to a drawing in modelspace........

This is also the reason I gave all the text scale's for people that don't like to put text in paperspace......

Sorry. I wasn't refering to associative dimensions. I was refering to the dimensions not being in the file you are dimensioning. I don't agree with this technique. That's all.

I thought the question was about TEXT, not dimensions? ADT automatically scale dimensions for you, but not text.

Text is much easier to deal with in modelspace, not paperspace, IMO.

We haven't heard back from the person who asked the question to see if we helped at all???

Very helpful indeed and an informative discussion. I didn't realize one should have these various dimstyles for the different scales. Can they be saved for reuse in other drawings?I'm afraid that I'm going the long way round as I work in this program. I did not understand what the response with the long list was-the scale = three numbers? I went to the LUG meeting and they suggested the 3/32 had a downside of poor legibility in a half size set and the notion of putting notes or dimensions in paper vs model space got some people going abit. Thanks, it's a great relief to have someone to ask who knows what they are talking about!
