Hello All,

I'm looking at purchasing a new printer for specifically printing 11x17 or larger. I prefer HP as the brand adn was wondering if anyone has any experience with either the HP 1220 series, HP 1700 series or HP 2600 series.
Any input would be greatly appreciated!

thanks,

Les

I bought a 1220C a couple of years ago, and I'm really happy with it. No problems, very good photographic quality, you get new printer headers each time you change the cartridges, it can print full DIN A3 without borders (well, you must use A3+ and cut the borders to get a borderless A3).

The only thing I dislike is that I wasn't able to load thick (Canson) paper. I've always loved to print on color Cansons.

I'm looking hard @ the HP Designjet 100. It does 11x17 & up to 24" wide sheet feed.

I looked at the HP 100 also, even though I already have a plotter.
I read somewhere that you must feed the paper from the rear and that's a little too annoying for me

I was thinking Dennis, since he's got an avatar of Darth Vader

I've had great experience with the HP5000...works and works and works...

The HP100 sounds interesting, though I've not used or seen it myself.

I love just about any HP printer. The cartridges are expensive, so I would suggest looking at which printer supports the 42ml cartridges so you won't go broke replacing them all the time.

And those Revit guys kill me... Dark Fortress! LOL! At least you're nowhere near REDMOND!

We have a HP CP1700 series. Great printer, more features than the 1200 series 11x17 printers and has extra paper bins capacities. I also like the color/ black cartridges in the 1700 better than the 1200. The price is a little more but I think worth it. $550.00 + extra paper bin for 11x17 paper (I think) around $165.00. The 1200 series I saw this weekend at Staples at around $300.00 after a 100.00 rebate.

The air isn't very good since the shield keeps falling down :D Just like Rick Moranis in Space Balls

Do you have an office copier? Check whether that can be used as a printer, it will give you black and white at A3.

We use a colour laser printer here and while it is an order of cost different from the machines you are talking about the linework is so crisp and clean that I find it worth it. On the other hand, it doesn't do photo quality.

I have to replace my HP DesignJet Color Pro Cad (renamed later HP 2500)

I use it most for check plots in 11x17, and reductions for the city. But I need to do renderings on this printer also.

Now HP has the DesignJet 30. Looks to be close to the HP 2600, but about $300 less.
They don't say the b/w print speed.

Anyone use this printer?

Thanks,
Brent

I recently bought a HP desk jet 9650 - It prints up to 13" x 19" (Super B) paper.
It is a fantastic printer. 13" x 19" paper is a terrific size as it allows you to print half size sets of 24" x 36" sheets while still allowing a bit of space for the printer margins. You can't print a perfect half size set on a standard 11" x 17" printer.

I have the HP 1220C plotter and it is a good printer except for the minor problem I have:

Scott,
A few questions about your printer...
1. It just has 16mb of memory, do you use it up very often?
2. The ink cartridges are only 17ml color and 19ml b/w ... how often do you have to change them?
3. Most 11x17 printers actually print to 13x19 paper... but I was wondering how much more money is 13x19 paper than 11x17?

Thanks,
Brent

Brent has a good point, when plotting several different drawings with the 1220C, my computer bogs down. Unless I'm plotting in the background; this is another negative aspect of this particular plotter.

BrentBrent,

1. For 13 x 19 black and white drawings I haven't had a problem with memory. Huge DPI color drawings at 13 x 19 can cause the printer to hang. I think there is a way to configure the printer to use some of your computer's ram or something like that.

2. I haven't had to change the cartridges yet - I have only had the printer for a few months and don't print an enormous amount.

3. The 13 x 19 paper is significantly more expensive than the 11 x 17 paper. Here is a cheap on-line source of 13 x 19 Paper..

We are using an HP 100 plus. Costs roughly $ 1000 and uses the same printheads as the larger Designjet 500/800 series. Black ink cartridge is also the same, although the color cartridges are not.

This plotter actually has a paper tray for 18x24-inch paper. This is a brand new product for HP although it replaces a very similar plotter.

In any event, we have had excellent success with it plotting both ADT and Revit drawings.

Well, I ordered the DesignJet 30 ($700 delivered + tax)
It will sit on my desk, so I didn't want any of the 24" printers.
I'll check on the 13x19 paper. Our old copier can't do that size, so I'll have to wait until we upgrade that first. But it would be great if the reductions were to scale (or should I say a usable one) :banghead:

I'll post how is is after I try it out.

Thanks for the advice everyone,

Brent
