To extrude without explicitly creating a region or boundary, first place the curson inside a closed area (eg: inside a wall plan) then press and hold CTRL + ALT. If you see the closed area highlighted, then left click there and give extrution hight. If not highlighted, release the keys and try again. You can dynamically drag and pick a point to assign the extrution height.
Works well in my AutoCAD 2007. Don't know about the earlier versions.

Very good tip! I know that often a quick control key will yield some extra functionality, but I would never think to try a cntrl + alt.

Wow, that's a great tip. I use boundary a lot when figuring out paving area on site plans. Now all I have to do is remember to do it this way!

I have been trying to use this tip to do a copy, move, erase, etc.
Can I do anything other than extrude?

I forgot to mention the most interesting part this shortcut. Using this tip, you can extrude a portion of block without exploding or refediting it.
:)

Hi Robert,
Not clear what you are trying to achieve. Are you trying to copy / move / erase a region ?

Do I have to extrude the region or can I use other commands? Yes, like copy, move, or
erase the region.

As far as I know, you can not perform other operations as the region creation and solid extrution are taking place in a single step.
If anybody has problem in detecting the region, try changing IMPLIEDFACE system variable from 0 to 1.
