I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before but i just discovered in my AutoCAD 2004, pressing shift while the pan command is active moves the drawing in left, right, up, down directions only... just like having Ortho Mode on.

You have a lot of zoom / pan tricks in the zoomextents (http://forums.augi.com/showthread.php?t=20665&page=1&pp=10&highlight=zoom+extents) thread.
