Is it possible to extrude a solid or 3d face in a rectangular path?

No, but it is possible to extrude a closed polyline shape around a rectangular polyline path.
Only a circle (as shape) will give a predictable result though.

You'll probably have more sucess by placing 4 extrusions in a rectangle and unioning them.
