In our continuing effort to better support our members, we have enabled direct attachment posting!

The following file types are allowed: all image formats, .rvt, .rfa, .zip, .pdf, .txt, swf
At the moment all attachment are shown as links, we will soon be enabling “inline” posting of images with automatic thumbnail creation.

This site will NOT be adding a family exchange area, that is what RUGI is for. We envision users posting families that they need help with, or pertain to the post in some way. Users may certainly post families just to share, but we encourage you to also post them at RUGI, and on the Autodesk Revit newsgroups.

All registered users are allowed to have up to 5mb of attachments at any one time. You can view (and edit) the total size of all your attachments by clicking on your username in the member list. If you feel you need a higher quota, we will consider lifting the constraint, if you have a real need.

See the FAQ, if you have questions or just post.

Enjoy and Happy Posting!

Can we reply to a sticky? Only one way to find out.....

Chris the 5MB is a pretty arbitrary figure I imagine. But with Revit files regularly running 5MB or more this prevents people posting a query that has a live project or stripped out project in it, particularly if you want to have the post there for a while, or if you want to post a fixed examlpe to someone else's query. I don't have a feel for what the number ought to be but at 5 it seems on the light side.

However there seems a simple enough way around this. I must have around 100MB of barely used online storage, my domestic connection probably adds another 50MB and I am sure we are not the only ones in this situation. Is there a way for people to donate 10 MB here and there that can be seamlessly linked into your server? That way when we hit 100 users with 10MB each you are not losing a Gig of staorage on your 8 Gig server drive.

HI Pete,

storage is not the real issue here, (I'd glady give up 4 gigs, for it's just sitting there) Bandwidth is.

The 5 mb limit is worse than you feared, I'm afraid. The max upload limit is only 1.5mb per attactment right now :( , this is purely for bandwidth reasons.

You see, I evisioned the attachments to be used as a way to be able to get help on broken families, or share a few, but really to post images.

My fear was that if we let users upload 6mb rvt files, and then have everyone download that, it uncessarly sucks bandwidth and can slow the whole site down.

I apprciate the offer of space, but to be honest, I wouldn't know how to do it?

The best thing users can do right now is host their own project file over 1.5mb, and provide a link in the post. But I realize few users have the means to do so. So if a particular users has a need to post a file bigger than 1.5mb, they will have to pm me, and I'll up their personal limit.

On the bright side, it seems that my average bandwith has been steadily increasing over the past weeks, so maybe limit lift could be in order?we'll see.

Z.

Hadn't thought of bandwidth restrictions. Good point.

Go much further with all this and you'll have to become your own ISP!
