View Full Version : Allow rotation point to be user-defined
Revit Wishes
2007-09-18, 09:02 AM
Summary: The point of rotation is currently set to be the center of the selected objects -- but this point may be off-screen and require zooming in and out. This work would be unnecessary if users could simply select the point of rotation.
Description: Alter Revit's behaviour so the center of rotation requires the user input, saving time.
How Used: Whereby you can rotate something without having to zoom-out to see its centre.
Feature Affinity: Other

This would be nice...I usually forget about it until I have to rotate something...

I´m not so shure of the utility of this wish, if we evaluate the number of times that we want to rotate objects, i'm shure that more than 70% are center rotation, specially when we are drawing interior layouts, this kind of change would create a bigger delay using rotate in almost every use of it.

it could be center default and have a pick option for a new center point
so you can accept the default or pick a new center
this would save a lot of time well in my case

I would prefer to have the cursor change into a rotation icon upon clicking the ROTATE button and place IT anywhere for the center point.

I agree with fernando, it works very well as is, once you discover that you can drag the center point icon to a different location if you desire. It is much faster to not be forced to pick this point with every rotate.

I think the key to this Wish would be that you can define the default Rotation Point when the Family is created. You'd still have the ability to move it at Insertion time - if you wanted to - but the default could be made more logical.

This works great for smaller objects....but for cases where your rotating larger objects, or DWG links where a starting point is important, having to zoom out and then zoom in to move the center point gets to be a hassle.

I find that 90% of the time, my rotation center is NOT the center of what I want to rotate. I would like to amend the wish as follows:
Once I invoke the rotate tool, I'll be asked to pick my center. If I don't pick a point and press spacebar or enter, then the center of the object/group is used. Otherwise if I pick a point/snap to an object, that point is used as the center of rotation.

This thread is making me seasick  are we talking about defining a rotation point in a family or defining the rotation origin when spinning a model in 3D view or rotating selected elements in a view. If it is the last is the wish asking that rather than defining the location automatically as it does now and giving us the option to move it...he wants to always click somewhere to pick instead of picking the icon and dragging? I'm :?
This applies to the rotation command. I want to rotate something so I select it and then select " rotate". I know where I want to rotate from, but now I have to hunt for the rotation icon and drag it to a point. I would like to be able to just select that point. This could be accomplished by having the rotate icon attach to the cursor when you select the "rotate" command, for instance. It's not so very difficult to understand.

...It's not so very difficult to understand...No that isn't but I read at least three other versions of ideas in other posts.
Ooops.........Guess I didn't read the follow up posts very closely.

I interpret it as being the center of rotation when you use the Rotate tool. With large objects you have to zoom out and all that....I'd prefer to pick a point myself, of press some keystroke to make it select the center automatically. I find that in most cases, I'm altering Revit's decision to use the center of the group/object I'm rotating.
