View Full Version : Improved Rendering Engine

Revit Wishes

Summary: As Autodesk's flagship AEC product, Revit needs a new rendering engine. Accurender 3 is old and needs to be replaced.

Description: I wish the rendering software in Revit was as good as Autodesk Viz.

How Used: Since both are Autodesk Products I do not see why Accurender is the rendering software. We would do more renderings and would be more efficient if we could render live models without the need to export, which then makes the exported file dead and no longer live updating.

Feature Affinity: Rendering

I agree Accurender should be replaced. Autodesk should use Mental Ray since they have integrated it into AutoCAD 2008, 3D Studio Viz and Max.

From a historical stand point, Revit was a separate competing company called Revit Technology Corporation before Autodesk bought them out. Accurender was incorporated into Revit early in its inception to its detriment. Removing Accurender is not an easy task. It means removing the materials library (rendering portion only) from Revit as well since it is based completely on Accurender. Recreating or replacing that materials library based on Mental Ray will be a huge task.

I place a 3rd vote on this.

Personally, possibly the easiest fix would be for Revit to be able to write and import a .max file so that Viz and Max could read/wite a translation to Revit.

I agree with both suggestions. I think Revit desperately needs a much improved Rendering engine that fits within the workflow already established in the software. Also, from experience the interoperability between Revit and Max/Viz while better than with something like FormZ still are far beneath what I expect given who owns them both... There are just some things I don't want in Revit (complex and large sites, highly detailed tree and bush models (like from Onyx) that I can put in a max file for really high end renderings. I should be able to link a Revit mode DIRECTLY into max, and have a one-stop tool for defining how a material in Revit is displayed in Viz/Max, and that setting should be mapped and remembered.

I was pretty disapointed when Mental Ray was not added in RAC 2008. This is high on my wishlist as well. However they do need to make a feature to convert all of my 300+ Accurender materials.

Agreed, again, for the 2459th time.
No angst, just reporting the facts.

Metal Ray and the Max/Viz material editor should be in Revit out of the box! And I would not mind if Vray could plugin to Revit.
