I have often had the same thought. If you don't want to move it then why they hell would you want to delete it?
On the other hand, what if you do indeed want to delete multiple pinned objects? There would need to be an easy way to do this as well. It seems like it could be a pain to find out which objects are pinned and then go through the process of unpinning each one before you could delete it.

Couldn't you just select the objects you want to delete, pin them, un-pin them and then delete? I don't see why that wouldn't work. I don't like the fact that pinned objects can be deleted. It should give you the warning but NOT delete the object. Or ask the user "Are you sure you want to delete the pinned objects?" and then present them with yes/no buttons.

It is a known issue that while pinning should not allow deletion it actually does. I think their intent was to have pins work as you desire, unfortunately for us the actualities are distinct from the intent...Maybe acknowledging this as being a "Known-Issue" is enough...
From Revit Help:
Revit Architecture displays a pushpin control near the component to indicate that it is pinned in place. To move or delete the component, you must first unlock it by clicking the pushpin control. Click the pushpin again to lock the component.
