i am having a hard time getting my different wall components on separate layers. I have read posts and played with the txt files but they always come in on A-Wall color 2. How does one get his head around this?

Theres no text file to edit. you go to File>Import/Export Settings and assign the layers to your subcategories(this takes some time to set up right, but you'll see under walls, you can chose what each function layer of the wall goes too. You maybe having a problem with common edges exporting to the layer you don't want.

...just to clarify, File>Import Export/Settings does nothing more than edit a text file. The default text files are located in \Program Files\Revit Architecture 2008\Data\...

You can locate these files on the network if you like. Each Revit's project remembers what import/export file is associated with it. The settings are retained internally to each project. I suggest you set this infromation in your template.

You learn something everyday with revit. So I assume you could edit in excel?

Maybe im not seeing somthing. I have changed all of the settings to the different parts of the walls go to different layers, stud, sheeting, gyp, etc. when i export its all on the same layer.

Yep, you must be missing something., you've gone to file>import/export settings> you have a wall with the proper functions assigned and a view set to fine. also you might want to try click VV and there is a check box for overiding cut settings. check that and see if it works.

Still not working, I have set the view to fine. not sure what you were talking about in the end of the post. Seems to put everyting on the common edges layer and not the individual layers. I am trying to be able to export and have the core (stud) control via layer and set the finishes to another layer.

Copy paste your wall to a blank revit file, post it with your export settings. I'll take a look at it.
