Is there a way to get rid of all of the components that make up a surface without changing the surface? When you add a "contour" or "breakline" to the definition it works great but now you have to hang on to that contour or breakline because if you erase it, it changes the surface. All I want to do is add the contour and then have the updated surface without all the underlying linework and features. The only way around this issue (that I know of) is to data shortcut it out of the original drawing, reference it into another drawing, promote it, and then data shortcut it back to the original drawing to promote it again. The "new" surface now represents the old surface but without all the "stuff".... There's gotta be a better way. Suggestions?

Will making a snapshot of the surface work?

Surface properties->Definitions tab->Build. The first item is "Copy deleted dependant items". If you set it to YES, when you delete the contour or line, it will copy it to the surface and you can then insert it back into the drawing if needed.
