I have been making some notes on transferring project stadards and I was wondering if anyone had anything to add:

a) Transferring Project Standards
i) Not all project standards may need transferring
ii) Transferring families and groups should be done with the File>Save to Library>Save Family or Save Group and then loaded into the new project.
iii) If error occurs it is suggested to transfer standards one at a time to see which one is causing the problem
iv) Profiles do not show up in the list but are transferred if the object using the profile is transferred. Ex – Railing profiles
(a) The existing style could be the same name as the one being transferred but it will not overwrite the existing style with the new style. This would have to be updated with the new profile in the new project.

Any warnings that I should know about would be great to hear as well. I am trying to build a Best Practices document here.

I would add something about only transfer the project standards you need. Don't just blindly transfer ALL project standards unless you KNOW for sure 100% that you'll need everything, like when starting a project very similar to a previous one.

I guess I should expand this part:
a) Transferring Project Standards
i) Not all project standards may need transferring

Thanks - any other ideas?

I just had a good question from a student in my RAC 2008 Intro class today that touches on one of your points:

If someone purged out all unused families and types from a project, then wanted to re-import the same ones (say from a rolled-back copy) after more work had been done and saved into the file, is there an easy way to do this as a batch? I couldn't think of one, other than saving out each family from the rolled-back copy of the project one at a time, then loading them all with one load into the current project file.

Anyone have thoughts on this one?

I would add one more: be VERY careful when you transfer Project Info - it WILL overwrite your current details of the Clients, addresses and what have you with the ones from the other project...

Good to know - hey thanks!
