I am looking to figure out if it is possible to determine what fill pattern a certain material will display in different detail levels (coarse medium or fine).
So far it seems that walls and floors and other categories look the same in medium and fine detail level.
Can I change that?
Can I tell a wall for example to show a fill pattern for brick at medium and fine but only show the fill pattern for plywood at fine detail level?
Thanks.

You could use filters to apply this kind of change on a per view basis. It would not be possible to make this kind of change respond to a change in the detail level of a view.

I have found that the following system works pretty well.
Course Detail: Design. Everything Poches.
Medium Detail: Plan & Section views. My materials are based on this level of detail only, and materials only have a cut pattern if they are brick thickness or more. So no pattern for Gyp at 1/4"!
Fine Detail: Details, with Detail Components layered over the model as late in the game as possible.
With this system, a detail would show a diagonal hatch for brick in detail, just like in plan, and no hatch for gyp, but accurate notes and dimensions, till late in CDs. Then I would add a Repeating Detail Component over the brick, that shows individual hatched bricks and grout. And a line based Detail component for the Gyp that shows hatch. And all late in the game.
Not as ideal as scale or detail based materials, but it does work pretty well. you have details that are 100% right, if not the traditional graphic look, for as long as possible, and late in the process you finalize the details with 2D embellishments as needed.
I am sure a few more systems will get mentioned as well. No one answer, to be sure.
best,
Gordon
