Has anyone installed the Monster Service Pack? What are your opinions? I feel as if performance on my home system got noticeably sluggish. Anyone else? The IT Division has not approved it yet here at work.......

Hi Shannon
Please note I've *moved* this thread from the Coffee Without CAD (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=45) Forum to this one as I feel this particular Forum is a more appropriate place for such a topic.
Why?
Hopefully this thread will generate some good information + I believe the Coffee Without CAD (http://forums.augi.com/forumdisplay.php?f=45) Forum will be spring cleaned once in a while.
Thanks, Mike

Hi
Yes I've installed Service Pack 2 on my home PC (XP Pro), at the moment I've not got AutoCAD installed on that machine, therefore can't really comment on that side of things.

I just got an e-mail newsletter from our AutoCAD dealer (CVIS) advising us not to install SP2. They say, "Right now SP2 is only going to get in the way unless you're in between projects and have time to test it out "

Installed SP2 last week on XP home. 2.8ghz, 512ram, 32mb video ram, ADT 2004. No problems... yet - Priceless. For everything else there's Mastercard.
At work, IT controls EVERYTHING!! No SP2 yet. It'll probably be years before we see it here.

I just downloaded this at home. And my system is noticeably slower!!!!! Not too happy about that. IT installed it here at work a week or two ago and I run AutoCAD 2005. There has been no trouble at all with my workstation here at work.

We have Autodesk Autocad Release 14. I have installed XP Sp2 on two PC's, both of which now have the same problem when exiting AutoCAD, we get the following error message:
The instruction at "0x008c231e" referenced memory at "0x042831dc". The memory could not be "read". Click on OK to terminate the program.
it happens upon exiting AutoCAD, which isn't really critical, but will be a pain for our users if I can't find a solution for this.
It was working fine before installing SP2. I have also turned OFF the firewall to see if it makes a difference, but it does not.
Has anyone seen this before? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi
Am afraid you may have no luck on that one.... AutoCAD R14 was released long before Windows XP appeared therefore was never tested on that Operating System.

I've had 2 episodes here at the office where people loaded the SP2 on their machines (yes, their Windows Auto Update is turned on).
The first one I heard about from our IT person. I don't know whether the machine was running ABS2004 or ADT3.3 but, once the sp was installed AutoCAD wouldn't open any drawings.
The other incident happened today. A user couldn't get his ADT3.3 to bring up the plot dialog.
Both machines functioned perfectly as soon as SP2 was removed. I've told the Autodesk help desk that unless they come out with an official statement that products I'm using have been checked out and work with SP2, there's no way I'm loading it onto my machines. Fortunately, I'm about ready to load ABS 2005, which has been checked with SP2.

I installed it a couple weeks ago at home. Seemed to work fine but most of my...ahem..."son's" games would no longer work, so I promptly uninstalled it.
Been skeered away from firing it up at work.

I placed it on a friends Laptop (a pretty robust SONY)
that had just been reformatted due to a NTOSKRNL failure
of some sort.
So thought I, there's nothing to lose. It immediately rejected
his HP multi-function device and it's drivers. Upon download
of new drivers it then fails to identify USB ports, also requiring
a driver update of the USB hub(s) drivers, then the printer would work.
It also rejected the audio device drivers also requiring an update.

My only problem has been trying to open multiple drawings from windows explorer.
win explorer and acad both lock up, then I ctrl alt del to shut down windows expl. and acad comes back to life.
and, don't you people tell me not to open drawings from explorer!!! I like it, and I'm not going to stop!!!

I have installed SP2 on four computers (Win XP Pro, P4 2.8 512RAM ; AutoCAD 2004 LT) at my office and i have no problems.I'm not a fan of Microsoft but I recommend SP2. I haven't noticed that it is slower or faster :)
(I like the firewall and the pop up blocker.)

I received the following e-mail from my Aoutodesk reseller a while back.
"To All Users,
I have just received an email from Autodesk regarding an issue that Microsoft are responsible for in regards to Windows XP Service Pack 2. Here is the feedback from Autodesk , Please let all your users know about it.
Support for Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
At present none of the following applications are supported for installing on systems running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2: 1. AutoCAD Mechanical 2. AutoCAD Electrical 3. Autodesk Mechanical Desktop 4. Autodesk Inventor 5. Autodesk Inventor Professional 6. Autodesk Vault
The Autodesk development team are working together with Microsoft to resolve this issue as quickly as possible. We will announce separately in the near future when XP SP2 is a supported platform.
Please be aware that this is a Microsoft problem and not an Autodesk problem."
Then, this, yesterday.
"Hi Ron,
Currently Autodesk are testing this service pack with all autodesk products. Only AutoCAD and Verticals have been certified. Inventor is still in testing. I will send an email to all once Inventor has been certified with XP SP2"
Go figure.

I have now four PC's running with Win XP Pro SP2 and AutoCAD 2004LT and one PC with Win XP Pro SP2 and AutoCAD 2005LT. I have found/noticed/encountered no problems.
So form my point of view, i recommend it.

There are known issues with installing SP2 on systems with some Pentium 4 Prescott processors, apparently the system locks up during boot. I have a P4 Prescott box so I have not installed it therefore everything is still running fine and I am happy! (except for having to close that little "updates" bubble everytime I boot up).

Go into your Control Panel and turn off your auto update function. This will eliminate the annoying bubble.
