To maintain the database links that exist for that
shape file, you will need to look at the folowing
documents:
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2880562&linkID=2786831
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/ps/item?siteID=123112&id=2865728&linkID=2786831
I think I have also seen that if you attach the data source
prior to importing the shape file, that the links will be preserved
for you on import. However I might have been reading that
incorrectly.

When importing the SHP file, click in the data column where it says <none>. The resulting dialog will allow you to choose "Create object data" and if desired select specific fields to include (all fields are imported by default. The data will be attached to the objects as object data.
