I have a door family--created with a void instead of an opening cut.

I have a window family--also created with a void instead of an opening cut.

I start a new door family, nest the door family and window family mentioned above. Everything looks fine, flexes fine in the family.

BUTTTTT

When I place this new door family into a project, the wall does not get cut. Do voids not "transfer" when nested?

HELP!

why "created with a void instead of an opening cut."? did it work directly?

if you nest the family, something important, you may delete the opening cut first.then link door family and window family...

Used a void instead of an opening cut so that later I could add a sill or lintel using both a void and a solid so that it properly cut the wall. (Opening cuts and voids cannot exist together in the same family).

I changed the door from an opening cut to a void in order to match the window.

I did delete the opening cut in the "master" door family prior to inserting the two nested families.

No dice.

Any other thoughts?

I think this was covered in this thread _

I don't know what I did differently--just waited another day as far as I can tell, and presto, it is working today.

Door family has a nested transom family. Both times, wall is cut with an opening cut. Working fine in the project as well.

I'll have to put the crack pipe at the office away, I guess.

Did you have an opening cut on both the door and transom?? Everytime I try this (having a common boundry between a door/window & transom opening cut, it doesn't work. I've gotton around it with Martin's method (use one opening cut for both), or by separating the opening cuts by a miniscul length (1/128"). The only problem with this method, if the wall is much thicker than the assembly, that damn slice shows...

For complex nestings(not that yours sound complex, but the same issues might be showing) I need to have NO opening or void in the original family, I make the opening in the host family, then place the peices together within that opening.

This is especially true when trying to mull together windows. For example if you try to take 2 casement windows and mull them together, they work fine, now try to add two transoms on top, it fails. For whatever reason revit can handle things mulled together in one direction, but not 2 and can't handle the openings touching, so if you have trim between them they work fine, but if you align the openings, no go.

So what I do is open the original file and delete the opening, turn it to wireframe so you can see the elements, then load those into the host.

Beware, many families have sweeps defined by the opening instead of ref. planes so these families(mostly the mfg windows and pella windows) will fail when inserted you need to re associate the sweeps with the ref. planes instead of the opening.

This is all a big pain and hopefully will be fixed in the next release.
