Is it at all possible to select a piece of geometry in 3ds max and view what material has been assigned to it???

Yup! select the object and then take a look at the attached screen cap.

You can also see what material is assigned to the object by the type of "brackets" it has in the preview window (sphere).

If the corners are solid, then it's been assigned to that object.
If they are "hollow" then it's in the scene, but not on the selected object.
No brackets means that material is not assigned to anything in the scene.

If you typically use a ton of materials in your scene, then Dwanye's method is the most efficient to quickly locate the material.
