I am struggling with a bit of lisp. When I try to load it I get "error: bad character read (octal): 0". Where can I find explanations (fairly simplified ones) of error codes?

Try reopening, deleting any strange looking charactors at the end of the file and saving without any formating with an ASCII editor like Notepad, Notepad+ or Textpad. Your bad charactor is probably just a formatting code or end of file indicator.
