Surface- Spot Elevations

I would like to change the surface my spot elevations referencing. Is there a way to change them?

It is easy if you use General Note Labels with Reference Text instead of Surface Spot Elevation Labels...

I seem to remember someone else coming up with a way to do it for the Spot Elev labels, too, but it was tricky. I think it involved using LandXML to basically redefine the surface, or something like that, but I forget exactly what now...
