Are there any step-by-step instructions on creating parametric families, especially with Type Catalogs? I see plenty of "here's the concept, don't worry about the picks and clicks." I get the concept, I really do. What I need are the "picks and clicks." Through trial and error I have created a relatively complex Structural Framing member using a Type Catalog with profiles and sweeps. Was rather proud of myself. I then attempted a simple section (flat slab planks with only one parameter, the thickness). Revit reads the Type Catalog when I load the member, but the Thickness (the only parameter) does not change with each type. The thickness of the member remains constant (the thickness that was drawn when the profile was created). I can't find any differences in the method that each family was created. Therefore, I am looking for something with step-by-step, cause-and-effect, black-and-white, hold-my-hand-while-I-pee instructions.

Sorry, the best information I've found regarding Catalogs is the Help file. Good luck.

From my advanced Revit course notes: (now that I finally found them)
Create .txt file with the same name as the .rfa
on the top row, list your parameters like this:
,parameter1##length##meters,parameter2##area##millimeters,parameter3##other##,etc
for the data, type the name for the item, then your data, seperated by commas eg:
window23,1500,3,timber
The part between the hashes is the type, and can be length, area, volume, angle, force, and linear force.
After the 2nd hash pair you puy your units where applicable.
If you want something that is not one of those types, use ##other##
Units can be millimeter, meter, inches, feet....and the metric needs to be spelled like here, not as per british/aussie spellings of those units. (You'll need to check the help file for units for force etc)
Parameters are case sensitive.
Hope that helps some.

Download this.
It is not structure but refers to family creation and has has indepth information regarding all forms of family creation.
This is the PDF
http://revit.downloads.autodesk.com/download/RAC2009/Families_Guide/ENU/Family_Guide/PDF/ArchitectureFamiliesMetENU.pdf
The following is the link to download the datasets for the exercises again this is not structure but the principles of family creation are the same throughout all platforms of Revit.

They are under the heading "Families Guide Metric Training Files"
Obviously if you need the imperial datasets download those instead of the metric.

This is a really good site for learning these things.
