External objects in views

Has anyone had any luck with getting xrefs, or even solid objects that are not steel objects to display in the steel model consistently (preferably in schemes as well)

It seems to eat any object I xref in or draw when I edit a scheme. (possibly did when grouping as well)

Certain views really do need to see my concrete walls, and this is bugging me.

I'm brand new with autocad, but I seem to be getting better results if I insert backgrounds as blocks rather than xrefs. Even if I'm inserting the same background twice, I'll copy and rename. This seems to keep asd from cleaning it out.

I just find it frustrating that xrefs worked fine in 2009, but "vanish" in 2010, as does drawing in a solid object.
