(BTW, above example is from 2011)
OK, I thought the OP was talking about the background around the layout, the gray surrounding the edge of the paper
Uniform background controls both the color of the layout background AND the paper background. If the paper background is checked to display and the OP is referring to the background behind it, then yes there is no control for that.
Didn't cross my mind to think of the background behind the background ;)
maybe WJM will chime in and clarify if he hasn't been scared off...
