Here is this light that I would love to model. I've tried modeling it as a in place generic mass but it doesn't seem to be working correctly. Any suggestions? Any examples similar to this one? I haven't been able to find one.

A mass object can not be a light fixture (at least one that emits light). You'll need to create a light fixture family.
I can't tell if each of these 'rods' is a single fixture or if they are combined into a single fixture. Either way you'll need to use reference lines to allow the component to rotate in more than one plane.
To create a fixture family with multiple light sources you'll need to model one of the 'rods' and then nest it a number of times into a light fixture family. Within the fixture family use reference lines arranged at the correct angles and then place the nested families on the various ref lines.
If this is your first family, you've chosen a tough one ;)
I can see that the same fixture in the background is hanging straight vertical and others are suspended from both ends. I think you will want to next the modeled fixture as demitri said. I can see one version nested into a end-supported pendant configuration and another where you can define the pendant length at both ends.
The hard part is getting the "rod" fixture to nest so that it can be oriented along any angle in 3-dimensions, right? Wasn't there a long thread about this topic not so long ago? I tried this morning to create a family that could be nested and configured in all the ways show in the photo, but with no luck. I couldn't even get the light source to be locked to a ref line and rotate with it. I'd find this topic very interesting as a test case. Anybody know where to find that old thread?
Adaptive components maybe? Just thinking this looks like it may be a good candidate for it.

The trick is to host nested families on the workplanes of the reference lines. As mentioned by mthurnauer this needs to be a single `rod`fixture that can be manipulated on three axes.
Instead of creating a light with a light source....create a family that has a light enabled material...
Here's my attempt. It took three families as suggested by others. Michael, I took your advice and skipped the light source in favor of an emitting material. This one has the three rods and you can change their angle downward. I didn't hook up all the parameters for length and radius, etc. If anybody would improve this family, suggestions are more than welcome. mxchick, I hope this helps at least to get you started. If not, it was a good exercise.
